During the course of the 14 Aug Group 2 StaffEx, a briefing on what forms to expect to fill out during a mission, we were interrupted by Lt Col Gary Metz, Wing Operations Officer. The CAP was being activated to participate on an actual mission in the Wilkes-Barre area for a lost individual. At the time of the StaffEx, a number of cadets and seniors had come in full gear to be evaluated on their mission readiness, so Group2 was ready to participate.
The vans left for Wilkes-Barre, arriving at 1300 hours. At that time it was estimated the lost individual had been in the Promised Land State Park for over 23 hours.
Our CAP members were dispatched onto different teams and two of our members from York 301, S/M James Thompson III and C/2d Lt Aaron Johnson were on the team that found the man.
Capt Gail Bollinger, commander of York 301, stated, “in all my years involved with CAP on sorties, FTX’s and searches, this was one of the roughest terrains to travel through on foot.”
Congratulation to all who helped save this man’s life, Let this show everyone that THIS is what CAP is about. Well done, team!
James R. Eiben, Maj, CAP
Group 2 Deputy Commander
